Product description

This English edition is a translation of the core emotional needs poster. The poster shows all seven core emotional needs, each with an illustration and a short explanation in English of what that need involves. Including the two newer core emotional needs, self-coherence and justice, added on the basis of research by Arntz and colleagues (2021).

The colours and positions of the core emotional needs match those on the English schema poster, making it easy to draw the connection between the two. Want to know more about core emotional needs and schema therapy? The knowledge hub has an in-depth article on it, currently still in Dutch.

The seven core emotional needs on the poster:
Connection and Safety, Autonomy, Self-expression, Spontaneity and Play, Realistic Limits, Justice, and Self-coherence.

Which format suits you?
The A3 talking card (297 × 420 mm) is printed on 300 gsm synthetic paper with a double-sided matte laminate. Sturdier than the A2 poster, and resistant to lots of handling and grubby fingers. Great for picking up and using together in session.

The A2 poster (420 × 594 mm) is printed on 200 gsm paper with a thin matte laminate. Ideal for hanging on the wall of a consulting room or group space.

Skin tone options
You can choose between a lighter or darker skin tone for the figures. Please indicate your preference in the options.

Ordering more than one?
If you'd like both the posters, you'll get a small discount. Also interested in the card set? The complete Schema Therapy bundle works out even better value.

Sources and references

  • Schema therapy was developed by Jeffrey Young.
  • The overview of the Dutch Association for Schema Therapy was used as the basis for which core emotional needs, schemas, and modes are included. This was supplemented with the newer core emotional needs justice and self-coherence, and the corresponding schemas lack of a coherent identity, lack of a comprehensible world, and injustice, based on: Arntz et al. (2021): Towards a reformulated theory underlying schema therapy: Position paper of an international workgroup (open access: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10608-021-10209-5).
  • The following books were also used in developing the illustrated materials:
    • Schema Therapy by Jeffrey Young, Janet Klosko, and Marjorie Weishaar
    • Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder by Hannie van Genderen and Arnoud Arntz

In the photos, the prints are shown in a frame for a nicer image: the frame is not included as standard with a print, poster, or talking card. On request I do have frames in stock in dark and light wood, but shipping them is a challenge in itself given how most courier services work. Would you like to order a frame? Drop me an email, especially if you live or work nearby. You can also search for a frame in the right size yourself, online or at a (picture framing) shop. Do pay attention to the exact dimensions: an A3 poster is 29.7 × 42 cm, for example, while standard frames are often slightly different, such as 30 × 40 cm, which means it won't quite fit.
